Book Study: Waking Up White

America is experiencing a triple disruption of such magnitude that it leaves us wondering, “What is God’s Holy Spirit up to?” The reality of COVID-19, protests sparked by George Floyd’s death, and strong divisive views and attitudes are all too coincidental to think they are only of human design. Is not evil colliding, attacking us? Is not the ultimate healing response much deeper than science, protests, and politics? Is it not an individual and collective reckoning of our sin and brokenness?

Isaiah spoke the following at a time similar to our own when many forces of nature, politics and division were colliding: “Come now, let us argue it out,” says the LORD: “though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be like snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool. If you are willing and listening, you shall eat the good of the land; but if you refuse and are obstinate, you shall be eaten up by division!” The mouth of the LORD has spoken. (Isaiah 1:18-20)
